Systra HVM Barriers have been extensively used on a wide range of HVM projects to enhance building stand-off protection to deter attack and reduce consequential loss vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VIBIEDs) and increasingly specified for many vulnerable site perimeters.

Systra’s re-deployable perimeter and stand-off protection solutions have been designed to deliver unrivalled protection for people and assets against VBIED attacks and explosive blasts. The systems can be deployed quickly with minimal disruption, typically on a short or medium-term basis, providing an ideal solution for security-sensitive locations or events. Although they may be supplied in short runs to protect a small span, they may also be used in other Systra HVM products, including drop arm barriers and swing gates.

Systra Barriers have been installed at various high-profile locations and temporary venues. Many of these deployments provide operational continuity at each location. Thus, allowing sites to adapt as changes occur to the threat or site operations. The system provides an effective and highly reliable solution to the client’s individual changing needs.

The highly re-deployable nature of the system means it can be put into position quickly and then subsequently moved or reconfigured as the need arises, creating a legacy security solution that can be easily adapted to meet changing client requirements.

The Systra HVM Barriers have been designed to control traffic effectively across various road layouts. This means that many barriers can be linked together to create an extended length of HVM. Manufactured comprising two steel plates connected to form panels by an array of welded transverse bars. The panels are filled with ready mixed concrete, and the resulting composite offers protection against explosive blast and impact.

Each HVM Barrier is 900mm high x 3010 or 3213mm long with a depth of 416mm and weighs approximately 2858kg, providing a strong and heavy HVM deterrent. In addition, Systra barriers are typically linked using 2 x connection pins depending on the HVM requirements on the project. As a result, Systra Barriers are easily connected to other products in the Systra HVM range using the appropriate connector.

The Barriers are painted as standard using a two-coat paint system in black and yellow. Bespoke colour schemes based on RAL colours with reflective tapes/signage and embellishments are also available on request.

Usually deployed in conjunction with the Systra straight barriers to create a full HVM solution. Available in shallow curves with a radius of 15.13m or tight curves with a 3.81m, in either right-handed or left-handed versions.

Swivel Post Connectors

The swivel post connectors are supplied when the straight barriers need to be orientated at angles to accommodate the road layouts. In addition, these connectors also allow the barriers to be located on sloped or stepped sections of a roadway. The swivel post connector allows the barriers to be installed at angles ranging from 90 degrees to 180 degrees.

Fencing

Systra HVM Barriers are available with Zaun mesh fencing fixed to the top of the barrier. Supplied typically with HiSec 358, other mesh types are also available upon request. The ‘L’ shaped posts are fixed and secured to the barrier using anchors and channel clamps. Panels are secured using a post and clamp bar configuration, providing a simple and easy installation method. Supplied with vandal-proof security fixings and installed using either power or hand tools.

The Terror Stopper PAS68 bi-folding gates have been successfully tested at 40mph and 50mph with a 7.5T (N2 and N3) vehicle respectively. The arrestor system has been produced to the lowest penetration classification in its class. With shallow foundations and extremely low penetration, both products provide a superb engineered solution for hostile vehicle mitigation.

Independently tested to PAS68 Classification to 7.5T (N2) @ 40 mph (64kph) PAS68:2010 V/7500(N2)/64/90:0.8/0.0 and Crash Tested to 7.5T (N3) @ 50 mph (80kph), PAS68:2010 V/7500(N3)/80/90:0.7/0.0. Successfully impacted PAS 68, stopping a 7.5-tonne vehicle with zero penetration and remaining fully functional after impact.

Installation

The gate is supplied from the factory as a complete assembled tested unit. Both the 40mph and 50mph products have the same foundations with a depth of only 380mm. For a clear opening of 4.2m, the base dimensions are approximately 5.6m x 2.6m x0.38m.

Construction

Steel construction, galvanised and powder coated to a standard RAL colour. Vertical bar infill with options of different mesh and security topping available.

Dimensions

The gate is tested for a clear opening of 4.2m and can be manufactured for heights up to 5m. Outside dimensions over the posts are 4.8m and allowing for control cabinets is 5.4m. The overall height for the gate at 2.4m is approximately 2.8m allowing for the base frame.

Drives and Controls

The gate is hydraulically driven with a bespoke power pack and cylinder producing a smooth quiet operation with few moving parts. The gate has a powerful PLC with built-in diagnostics and programmable inputs and outputs that can provide numerous options depending on client requirements.

Electrical Supply

The gate requires a single phase 240volt 60Hz 16amp supply.

Safety

The gate comes as standard with CAT3 safety edges and a light curtain that protects the threshold. Additional options include laser safety devices to protect zones. This device can also be used to produce an alarm output should someone be in the vicinity of the gate when it is closed. The control panel also has a dual channel loop card compatible with safety induction loops if required.

Maintenance

Gate servicing recommended twice per annum

Operation

The gate is powered by a hydraulic power pack that also controls the locking pin. Typical operating times are 8-9 seconds after allowing the pin to raise and lower. The gate is very smooth and quiet with exceptional control in both directions. In the event of a power failure, the gate has a full manual override system.

Finish

All Zaun posts/panels/gates and painted auxiliary components (for example, clamp-bars, slide bolts etc.) benefit from a protective zinc layer and electrostatically applied polyester powder coating to BS1722 p16. Care is taken with pre-treatment to ensure sound adhesion between the zinc and paint layers. In a UK C1 environment, as defined in ISO 12944 p2, this should ensure a useful life expectancy of the fence of at least 15-20 years. Life expectancy in all environments can be extended by maintaining the fencing with regular washing. Useful life will be reduced if the fencing is damaged. Any coating damage should be repaired to reduce the effect on useful life.

Enhanced painting systems such as marine coatings are also available for improved life expectancy in C2-C5M environments. For a full list of colours, click here

TVCB (Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers) from Zaun are available in two levels of containment:

  • Multibloc 80, which provides a Performance Class of N1 with a Working Width of W3
  • Multibloc 110, which provides a Performance Class of N2, again with a Working Width of W3

Both of Zaun’s TVCB‘s are designed to deflect an errant vehicle away from local hazards within or immediately adjacent to the highway, which have the potential to cause danger to the occupants of an errant vehicle, the workforce, or others. Each TVCB is connected at the scarf joint using M24 high tensile bolts.

Each TVCB is manufactured from high strength concrete (50N / sqm) which, combined with approved steel reinforcing, enables the TVCB barriers to meet EN 1317 (Compliant Road Restraint Systems for Temporary Safety Barriers).

Zaun’s Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers (TVCB) are a perfect way to prevent unauthorised access or provide a safe temporary working area for your workforce; this could be along a roadside or construction site.

TVCBs can also be used for major temporary events, from political summits to major sporting events such as the Olympics, Football World Cup or Commonwealth Games, to protect pedestrians from traffic or provide traffic barriers and bases for fixing fences. (see MultiFence & MultiFence PAS 68 for more details).

What is TVCB?

TVCB is a temporary vehicle concrete barrier specifically designed for highway use. These can be used in central reservations and verge operations to protect the workforce from the on-coming traffic flow. Each TVCB is supplied with an arrow on the side of the unit to direct traffic and is fitted with lifting points for M24 lifting eyes.

TVCB Barrier

Installation

Intermediate barriers are symmetrical in cross-section and can be used for either verge or central reserve applications by turning them upside down. Barriers should be aligned according to the direction of the traffic flow, using the directional arrow cast into the face for orientation. Units are connected at the scarf joint, using M24 diameter high tensile bolts. Each TVCB can also be fixed to the carriageway if required by using anchor plates bolted to the underside of the barriers.

  • Provides a safe working area – protecting the workforce from vehicles travelling next to the site
  • Protection for the travelling public from roadside and site hazards
  • A safe and effective separation between opposing traffic streams in contraflows, by preventing ‘crossover’ accidents whilst maximising available carriageway width due to low deflections
  • Prevention for unauthorised vehicular access to site compounds, forecourts, car parks, fields or other property
  • Temporary aggregate bays or other storage areas
  • A security barrier for protection against vehicle-borne attacks, ram-raiders etc
  • Counter-weights or kentledge for scaffolding suspended shuttering, piling rigs etc.
  • Direction and protection for pedestrians or light vehicles in quarries, airports or other industrial, commercial or public areas
  • In conjunction with Multifence MultiFence PAS 68 – a high-security, easily-moved temporary perimeter fence

Zaun’s MRA PAS 68 Crash Rated Manual Barrier is specifically designed to incorporate our range of perimeter protection systems.

Our selection of crash rated manual barriers offers a range of barriers designed to combat differing speeds and vehicle types to suit most site requirements.

Manufactured in 3 different versions to deal with various threats and requirements, the MRA Barrier range of rising arm barriers are designed specifically to stop vehicles from gaining access to sites of critical national importance.

All versions also independently PAS 68 tested and approved.

  • 4m MRA PAS 68 Crash Rated Manual Barrier MK2
Manually operated rising arm barrier with a 4-metre opening also capable of stopping a vehicle at 30mph. PAS 68 rated at V3500[N1]/80/90/2.2-0.0
  • 3m MRA PAS 68 Crash Rated Manual Barrier MK3
Manually operated rising arm barrier with a 3-metre opening also capable of stopping a vehicle at 50mph. PAS 68 rated at V7500[N2]/48/90/0.0-0.0
  • 4.5 m MRA PAS 68 Crash Rated Manual Barrier MK3
Manually operated rising arm barrier with a 4.5-metre opening also capable of stopping a vehicle at 30mph. PAS 68 rated at V7500[N2]/48/90:0.0/0.0

This crash rated barrier system is manufactured by Zaun using her Majesty’s Government design. This manual, non powered rising/drop arm barrier has a maximum boom length of 4500mm.

The rising beam, also fully welded using a steel frame with an impact beam fitted to stanchions at 900mm in height. Additional signage, warning and information signs on the beam length are available.

Finish

All Zaun posts/panels/gates and painted auxiliary components (for example, clamp-bars, slide bolts etc.) benefit from a protective zinc layer and electrostatically applied polyester powder coating to BS1722 p16. Care is taken with pre-treatment to ensure sound adhesion between the zinc layer and the paint. In a UK C1 environment, as defined in ISO 12944 p2, this should ensure a useful life expectancy of the fence of at least 15-20 years. Life expectancy in all environments can be extended by the maintenance of the fencing with regular washing. Useful life will be reduced if the fencing is damaged. Any coating damage should be repaired to reduce the effect on useful life.

Enhanced painting systems such as marine coatings are also available for improved life expectancy in C2-C5M environments. For a full list of colours, click here.

Zaun’s innovative HVM crash fence system, RDS Original PAS68, is a fence panel and posts system that can be erected and removed within minutes, using an RDS block combined with the post arrangement.

The RDS PAS68 fence system is also crash tested and rated to BSI PAS68:2010 standards. Crash tested to stop 2.5 tonnes and 7.5-tonne vehicles meeting ratings of V2500(N1G)/48/90:4.7/0.0 and V7500(N2)/48/90:11.6/0.0.

This crash rated fence system offers a combination of high-security temporary fencing with a hostile vehicle mitigation PAS 68 enhancement, all within the same fence line.

This gives the system the product attributes normally only seen on permanent installations. Disruption-free deployment ensures on-site disruption normally associated with installing and removing a fence line at a minimum.

Available in heights of up to 3 metres and designed to incorporate vehicle and pedestrian access. Additional pedestrian access portals with PAS 68 rating and CCTV and PID systems are also available, using carefully selected system technologies. This entire system requires no foundations or ground pinning.

Ideal for sports and major event overlay. RDS is also sometimes used as a permanent fence line where below-ground foundations are not possible.

To suit customer requirements, RDS is also available to rent or purchase.
