We are pleased to annouce that Zaun has passed Cyber Essentials Plus. This means our IT systems have undergone a hands-on technical verification passing the following five technical controls:

  1. Firewalls
  2. Secure configuration
  3. Security update management
  4. User access control
  5. Malware protection
What is Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials is an effective, Government backed scheme that helps to protect organisations, whatever their size, against a whole range of the most common cyber attacks. Certification gives peace of mind that your defences will protect against the vast majority of common cyber attacks simply because these attacks are looking for targets which do not have the Cyber Essentials technical controls in place.

Cyber Essentials Plus still has the Cyber Essentials trademark simplicity of approach, and the protections you need to put in place are the same, but for Cyber Essentials Plus a hands-on technical verification is carried out.

Protection Through Innovation may look like just another new tagline but it forms the heart of Zaun Limited’s vision for the future as they launch their refreshed brand in their 25th year. Stewart Plant, Marketing Manager spoke about the new brand, vision, and values which place Zaun as the trusted manufacturing partner for sports and physical perimeter security.

So why a new brand for Zaun?

One of the main areas in which Zaun stands above the rest of the industry is in its design and in-house manufacturing. However, over the last few years this has also been the same area that Zaun has failed to convey to its clients and customers.

Zaun is the last in-house manufacturer in the United Kingdom of woven and welded mesh fencing systems, and that is something we need to be proud of and promote. Our ability to create new products that protect people, assets and events drive the innovations that have seen Zaun continue to challenge the industry on what sports and security fencing manufacturing should mean.

How do you represent all that in a brand?

First, we had to break down what problems we solve for our customers and clients. Sitting down with the internal team and customers aided us in exploring a full SWOT analysis of Zaun, not only as a company but as a brand. Our excellence in British manufacturing was the biggest strength which continuously repeated itself across everyone who responded.

With this in mind, we added the visualisation of a Union Flag to represent British manufacturing in the design of the new logo. Whilst this might seem just a simple addition it draws a line in the sand. We are Zaun and we are proud to be the last in-house British Manufacturer of Woven and Welded Mesh Fencing Systems.

With all these changes why didn’t you change the typography of the logo?

It was one of the first things we discussed at the concept design meeting. Do we change the typography and go with something new? However, this led to a second question; what does the logo already mean to the industry?

Zaun has been well respected over the last 25 years for manufacturing high-quality products for the sports and physical perimeter security industry. Since its launch on November 6th, 1996, problem-solving and innovation is at the core of Zaun’s continued investment in manufacturing machinery. Customers and clients recognise Zaun as a leader in quality and excellence.

The typography has been the one constant throughout our growth. Customers and Clients connect as soon as they see it, they feel secure that Zaun is a leader. Likewise, the history of the typography; first chosen by Alastair Henman (Managing Director and Founder) has woven itself into the core of the business, the internal team, and the local community.

Everyone loves a good tagline, why did you pick “Protection Through Innovation”

From ‘Zaun… means Fencing’ to ‘Zaun Makes Perfect Fence’ we have seen some interesting ones over the last quarter of a century. However, our new tagline isn’t just an easy marketing win. Protection Through Innovation displays our mission right at the heart of what we do.

Our investment in British Manufacturing is second to none. It forms one of the cornerstones of our five company values; Problem Solving, Excellence, Investment, Teamwork, and Trusted Partners. Through continued investment and the ‘Right People in the Right Places’ across our business we can offer solutions that stem from innovation to offer the highest levels of protection in sports and physical perimeter security.

What about the future?

The future has never been brighter for Zaun. 2021 was a year of reflection after coming out of the COVID-19 Pandemic. In 2022 we started to put the customer experience at the heart of our business. The future? Well as our new tagline says Protection Through Innovation.

Running a successful organisation involves many different things. One factor that is key but can get forgotten is how your business looks and what that says about you. This usually comes down to the features you have on-site and how the grounds you are based in appear. Taking the time to make sure you give off the right image is essential and will impact how successful you might be.

But what are three of the most effective ways to improve how your business looks?

Top-class security fencing

One great way to instantly improve the look of your business is to install top quality perimeter fencing around it. Doing so will give a real lift to your sites overall aesthetics and give it an ultra-professional feel. In addition, if you invest in the best security fencing, you will be able to customise it with company logos or fence toppings for extra visual appeal. Of course, if you already have fencing in place, you must remember to keep it in good order to keep it looking its best.

Bike lockers

More and more businesses are encouraging staff to cycle to work and help protect the environment. While this is naturally a good thing, it can mean numerous bikes being left around your grounds which can look unsightly. So why not think about having bike lockers fitted to help avoid this and improve your business visual appeal? These give a safe space for people to store their bikes and stop them from being left haphazardly around the place. This will not only make your business a better-looking place to work but also for clients to visit.

Keep your grass cut and landscaping in order.

Perhaps the last major thing to consider is looking after your landscaping, grass, trees and shrubs. Many businesses will have a combination of these on-site, and they can soon look messy if not kept maintained. For larger sites, it is often a good idea to employ staff to deal with it specifically. Organisations with less to look after might choose to outsource grounds maintenance, though.

Zaun can help improve site aesthetics.

Humans are visual animals, and this means how your site looks are key. This makes it a better place for staff to work and helps to project a better brand image. At Zaun, our top-quality security fencing and high-end bike lockers will certainly prove useful. Please browse our website or contact us at Zaun today for a chat.

While mesh fencing may be one of the most basic forms of fencing, it also has some of the most diverse uses, being suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. These uses range from industrial to residential and tends to be considered a very durable and reliable choice. Mesh fencing can be manufactured and designed for specific purposes and at specific sizes, meaning it is expertly designed to meet architectural requirements. Here we discuss some of the best uses for mesh fencing:

1. Security

Mesh fencing is commonly used as a perimeter wall or security fence. It can offer security purposes to residential, industrial or commercial properties. Mesh is also a popular choice for securing homes, however, this is often combined with a form of fencing that is generally considered more aesthetic. For increased security, some people choose a type of mesh fencing that prevents finger holds or tools being able to cut through, due to the extremely small openings.

2. Public Parks

As mesh fences can be installed in various different colours, some people enjoy the look of it in their local parks. For those who are passionate about plants, a mesh fence is a good alternative to wires for plants that climb, as they can easily take the weight without having to be regularly repaired, unlike the alternative.

3. Animals

Mesh fencing is a popular choice for fencing in animals, no matter what they are. As it’s possible to purchase the fence with different sizes of holes, it can accommodate any form or size of the animal. Some of the most common options are horse fencing, rabbit fencing and chicken coops. It is also an extremely safe option for animals, due to the lack of sharp edges.

4. Highways and railways

One of the main industrial uses of mesh fencing is on highways and railways for security purposes. They are extremely beneficial for preventing damage of the tracks, and also to prohibit animals from crossing over dangerous areas.

To shop our range of premium mesh fencing, don’t hesitate to visit our website, or contact us at Zaun for information and guidance.

Running a business is difficult. Profit margins can often be tight, and it routinely requires great levels of effort and exertion to break even, so it makes sense that some business owners will want to limit spending as much as possible.

However, such an approach could be detrimental in both the short and long term, especially if a failure to spend results in a lack of spending on security.

Quality security fencing can massively enhance a business’ level of protection, giving employers and employees additional peace of mind while also ensuring that goods, equipment and property cannot be damaged.

However, if your boss needs a bit more convincing before investing in fencing, these 4 reasons will go a long way to showcasing the benefits.

1. Fencing aids security

This is the most obvious benefit of fencing, but it absolutely needs to be highlighted. Fences are difficult to clamber over or under, are a visual deterrent, and massively reduce a would-be criminal’s capacity to cause damage to a company’s property or grounds.

2. Fencing is an investment

It is important to realise that fencing should be regarded as an investment rather than an outlay. The fact is, fencing – as well as other forms of security, such as CCTV – has the capacity to reduce any instances of theft, tampering or vandalism massively. Thus, over time, fencing is capable of saving businesses a lot of money.

3. Fencing design has moved on a lot in recent years

It used to be the case that fencing focused only on safety and completely ignored aesthetics, but fencing has moved on leaps and bounds in recent years. Zaun has an array of fencing solutions for every business, so if your boss wants increased security without having to compromise on visuals, there are numerous options available.

4. Fencing enhances the well-being of employees

The last year has truly showcased the importance of prioritising employee wellbeing at all times. This should, of course, be something all organisations focus on, but the last 12 months has shown that there is always more that can be done. For example, fencing, given that it protects businesses and protects employees, can be seen as an investment in security and staff wellbeing.

If you’re looking for high-quality security fencing you can rely on, take a look at the Zaun range today.

For any business, their site and grounds are an important part of their whole operation. Paying attention to your site is critical for making it a nice place to work and making clients or customers feel comfortable visiting you. Of course, there are many ways you could add value to your site (such as perimeter fencing), but bike lockers are worth thinking about too. But why does investing in them make sense?

Makes recruitment easier

Being able to attract the top talent to your company is vital for long-term success. The competition can be fierce, though, as all your competitors will be trying to sign them up as well! This means that you must find ways to stand out and show potential employees that you are the best choice. One way is to offer extras that others in your sector may not. Adding bike lockers to your site is a great example of this. Not only does it give potential staff more travel options for work, but it also gives them somewhere safe to store their bike.

They look great

Of course, adding any structure to your site has an impact on how it looks. With this in mind, you must only add structures that make your site look better. Bike lockers hit the mark here as they will add instant visual appeal to your grounds. Lockers come in a range of sizes and styles now, so you can pick one that has an exact look you need. Installing these types of lockers will also mean bikes are stored tidily and not left randomly around your site, making it look messy.

It helps your company be greener.

All businesses know how important it is to operate in an environmentally friendly way now. A great way to achieve this is encouraging staff to travel to work on a bike, rather than a car. If you can make this a key part of your green travel plan, it will show the world you really care. You need the right infrastructure in place first, though – with bike lockers for staff being a crucial ingredient. Bike lockers will mean people feel comfortable bringing their bikes to work and will therefore help you operate in a greener way.

Top-quality bike lockers from Zaun

Any lockers you install must be tough, stand out in all weathers, look amazing, and be hard to break into. The lockers we produce and install at Zaun tick all these boxes! Get in touch on 01902 796699 today for more details.

Temporary fencing is beneficial for securing events. It can be set up quickly and easily before the event begins and dismantled as soon as it’s over. However, you may be wondering what type of temporary fencing is best. You have two major options to choose from mesh fencing (which is made from metal wire) or hoarding (which is usually made from timber or similar material). Each option is suitable for different types of events. To decide which one is right for your event, you need to consider four important factors, which we’ll discuss in today’s blog entry.

1. Resilience

Temporary fencing made from wire mesh is generally more durable and resilient than timber hoarding. Hoarding can be effective at keeping people out who might otherwise wander in to your event accidentally. It can also deter petty criminals and casual intruders. However, if you have reason to believe that organised, professional criminals will try to break into your event, you’re better off with mesh fencing. Timber can be broken down by determined criminals, but wire mesh will stand up to most attacks.

2. Weight

Most types of hoarding are somewhat lighter than wire mesh temporary fencing. This makes them easier to transport, carry and set up. It also makes it easier to take down after your event is over. Therefore, if you need to set up and dismantle your temporary fencing as quickly as possible, hoarding is often a better option than mesh fencing. However, if you have ample time to set up and dismantle your perimeter, it may be worth using mesh fencing instead.

3. Effect on light levels

Mesh fencing lets light through, whereas hoarding casts a significant shadow. This is because hoarding is made from solid materials, whereas mesh fencing is made from individual strands of wire with spaces between them. If your event takes place in a large, open area, you don’t have to worry about the shadows cast by solid sheets. They won’t be sufficient to make your event site noticeably darker and will only affect the area of the site around your perimeter. However, if your event takes place in a smaller, less open space, you should opt for mesh fencing. After all, you’ll need to let in as much light as possible.

4. Cost

Hoarding is less expensive than temporary fencing. If you’re trying to save money, it’s the most affordable option. However, if your event has a larger budget, it’s often worth renting mesh fencing instead.

Whether you choose mesh fencing or hoarding, we at Zaun can meet your needs. In addition to permanent security fencing, we also offer temporary perimeter fencing and hoarding. Check out our range of products today.

Zaun is based in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands. Therefore the Black Country is a region of the UK close to our heart and one that we are very proud to be a part of. Today 14th July 2021, is Black Country Day, and the area comes together with activities and events.

Where is the Black Country?

The Black Country isn’t a region that can be located on a google map. It’s actually part of the West Midlands and commonly refers to all four of the Metropolitan Boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton. Typically used to promote the West Midlands region to the north of Birmingham.

Where Does the Name Come From?

The expression dates back to the 1840s. The Industrial Revolution saw the area become one of the most industrialised parts of Britain, with coal mines, iron foundries, brickworks and the like producing a high level of air pollution. The area is believed to have got its name from the soot that was produced during this time. However, a sense of shared history and tradition in the area has kept the term in use today.

The region was described as ‘Black by day and red by night’ by Elihu Burritt, the American Consul to Birmingham, in 1862. From Charles Dickens to William Shenstone, other authors refer to the intensity of manufacturing in the Black Country and its effect on the landscape and its people.

The flag

The flag is a regional flag representing the Black Country, and the design was chosen by public vote in 2012. The red and black colours were inspired by Elihu Burritt, who once said that the region is ‘black by day and red by night. The white triangular shape represents the glass cones common in Black Country architecture, while the chains symbolise something that the area is well known for.

Zaun is delighted to announce that several of our staff have successfully passed various training courses recently within the business, provided by PLT Training. These staff members have undertaken training to continue their career development and learn valuable knowledge for the company, ensuring safe working conditions are adhered to.

Safety in the Use of Abrasive Wheels Training

Andy Moore, Des Ellits, Tom Fedulins, Richard New and Thomas Slade have all completed and passed their Safety in the Use of Abrasive Wheels course. A course designed and structured to provide training in the safe use of abrasive wheels and meets the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98) and the Health and Safety Executive HSG 17. “Safety in the Use of Abrasive wheels”.

Concerning abrasive wheels, PUWER 98 requires, among other things, that all machinery is suitable for its intended use and is properly maintained and that employees, including those using, mounting and managing the operation of abrasive wheels, are fully informed and properly trained in their safe use.

Overhead Crane Handling Training

Lawrence Sinabgani, Alec Callear, Stuart Banks, Kevin Lloyd, and Andy Moore have completed and passed their Overhead Crane training course. This training allows the employee to carry out routine inspections of the machinery/lifting tackle and recognise the causes of load instability.  They can also operate the crane using safe and correct procedures in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and good practice.

Fire Marshall Training

Kevin Lloyd and Sharnie Tanner have completed and passed their fire marshall training course, the nominated emergency response personnel. This training provides staff with the knowledge and skills to fulfil the role of a company Fire Marshal. In particular, prepare them to respond promptly and positively in the event of a suspected or actual fire and facilitate the safe evacuation of premises.

Well done to everyone involved!

Zaun is delighted to announce that Wolverhampton Council has recognised us, that our employees have been regularly undertaking tests at the rapid test centres.

As recognition of Zaun’s commitment to keeping its staff safe and the public, Zaun was presented with a Covid Testing Recognition Scheme sticker, which is proudly on display here at Zaun HQ.

Regular workforce testing helps to identify asymptomatic cases of Covid-19, enabling isolation periods to start sooner and, thus, helps break the chain of onward transmission in the workplace. Additionally, regular testing assures that the business is taking the safety of its customers, employees and the public seriously. Our employees are encouraged to be tested on a twice-weekly basis.

The regular testing and adhering to social distancing and other COVID safe rules where possible within the factory have meant that Zaun has continued to operate through the pandemic with minimum disruption.

Health & Safety Manager David Sayers said

Employees’ health and wellbeing is of paramount importance to everyone here at Zaun. We have a statutory duty of care for people’s health and safety in the workplace. During these challenging times, it has been vital to prioritise procedures that will protect employees as much as possible from contracting coronavirus.”
