{"id":6948,"date":"2017-06-29T11:45:30","date_gmt":"2017-06-29T10:45:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/?p=6948"},"modified":"2022-01-06T16:17:34","modified_gmt":"2022-01-06T16:17:34","slug":"prison-security-fences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/prison-security-fences\/","title":{"rendered":"UK\u2019s biggest prison on verge of full capacity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The biggest prison in the UK should reach full capacity soon \u2013 with construction work on track to end next month to allow the opening of the third and final wing.<\/p>\n<p>The first prisoners were moved to HMP Berwyn in Wrexham on 28 February into the Bala wing, the first of three, all designed ultimately to house 702 prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>The second, Alwen, opened last month, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/ministry-of-justice\">Ministry of Justice<\/a> (MoJ) bosses confirming the third and final wing, Ceiriog, is on schedule to open next month, bringing the total capacity of adult male offenders to 2,106 \u2013 500 more than the biggest current prison in England and Wales was built to hold<\/p>\n<p>The majority will be Category C, meaning they have been assessed as having a lower likelihood of escaping, though some Category B prisoners could also be accommodated.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Russ Trent has said his emphasis is on rehabilitation, with staff calling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/fencing-and-drones\/\" title=\"British prison pioneers war against drones\">prisoners<\/a> &#8216;men&#8217;, who will have &#8216;rooms&#8217; rather than cells.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/construction-site-fencing\/\"  title=\"construction\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">construction<\/a> of HMP Berwyn began in May 2015 and cost \u00a3250m.<\/p>\n<p>The UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/prison-drones\/\" title=\"Prison drones pioneers introduce Government to perimeter savings\">government has pledged to spend \u00a31.3bn on new prisons<\/a>, and after the riots in HMP Birmingham last year, Justice Secretary Liz Truss said the new Welsh prison &#8216;would help reduce overcrowding across the estate&#8217;.\u00a0 Nine more new prisons are expected to be built, with five open by 2020.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/binns-fencing.com\">Binns Fencing<\/a> won the order to supply and install almost 2km of 5.2m high prison-standard secure perimeter fencing for the Wrexham super-prison.\u00a0 Manufacturer Zaun supplied the MoJ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/products\/cpni-rated-fencing\/\" title=\"ArmaWeave\u00ae Plus CPNI Approved Fencing\">approved prison posts and fencing<\/a> mesh.<\/p>\n<p>Binns has proposed new perimeter security and <a data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/products\/perimeter-intrusion-detection-system\/\">PIDs<\/a> procurement and delivery model. It provides a single point of contact for the complete <a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/products\/perimeter-fencing\/\" title=\"Farm Perimeter Security\">perimeter security<\/a> package, providing greater opportunity for innovation, reducing complexity, and managing multiple contractors.<\/p>\n<p>It believes this could offer significant cost savings on PIDs cable <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/casestudies\/fence-walkway-system\/\"  title=\"installation\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">installation<\/a> and contract and project management costs.<\/p>\n<p>HMP Berwyn is already anticipated to be the cheapest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/prison-fence-toppings\/\" title=\"Zaun toppings combat prison riots\">prison<\/a> to run per prisoner in England and Wales.\u00a0 It is expected to run at \u00a314,000 per head per year, including overheads, compared with \u00a340,170 at Parc in Bridgend, built under the government&#8217;s Private Finance Initiative and operated by G4S.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The biggest prison in the UK should reach full capacity soon \u2013 with construction work on track to end next month to allow the opening of the third and final wing.
