As a result, Thames<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thameswater.co.uk\">\u00a0Water<\/a> has ordered security fencing through <a href=\"https:\/\/binns-fencing.com\">Binns Fencing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Binns have installed <a href=\"\/products\/cpni-enhanced-fencing\/\">ArmaWeave<\/a>, HiSec and Axiom steel mesh from parent company Zaun, while Duo fencing, sliding gates and railings have been included at all main entrances. In addition, Oak Habitat gates and post and wire fencing provide a more natural boundary to non-secure areas.<\/p>\n<p>The project&#8217;s principal contractor was London-based construction company <a href=\"https:\/\/rooff.co.uk\/\">Rooff<\/a>, a family-run business with a track record stretching back 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>The area\u2019s distinctive nature stems from its importance as a historic operational <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/blog\/mapping-threat-landscape-2017\/\" title=\"Mapping the threat landscape for 2017\">landscape<\/a> that supplies drinking water to London, and its rich biodiversity, which is of international importance for water birds.<\/p>\n<p>The concept is to create a \u2018green core\u2019 of the naturalised landscape at the heart of the reservoir complex with a generous pathway through the centre of the site and connecting to the strategic pedestrian and cycle route through the middle of the Lee Valley.<\/p>\n<p>The project was designed by architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwmarchitects.co.uk\">Witherford Watson Mann<\/a> and landscape architects <a href=\"https:\/\/kland.co.uk\">KLA<\/a>, with engineers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.p3r-engineers.co.uk\">P3r<\/a> and TALL, consultants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiodekka.com\">Studio Dekka<\/a> and collaborating organisation Counterculture.<\/p>\n<p>The reservoirs\u2019 importance as a potential nature reserve was recognised as early as 1945 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Patrick-Abercrombie\">Professor Patrick Abercrombie<\/a>, who said: \u201cA series of great reservoirs [is] acquiring a charm of [its] own as trees grow around them and on their little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaun.co.uk\/ascension-island-fencing\/\" title=\"Jumbo journey for Ascension Island appointment\">islands<\/a> \u2013 they are becoming nature reserves for large numbers of birds and the resort of privileged fisherman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese areas are a great open-air lung to the crowded East End \u2013 their preservation is essential&#8230;Every piece of open land should be welded into a great regional reservation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An \u00a38.7m visitor centre to open up access to one of the East End\u2019s \u2018open-air lungs\u2019 has been completed at a strategic 500-acre Thames Water site.
